Shining a Light on Injustice: Vigil to Uplift the Moreno Forero Family Targeted by Trump's Deportation Machine
On their way to Louisiana, SEIU members participating in the Justice Journey held a vigil for the Moreno Forero family to shine a light on the cruelty that the Trump administration' s deportation machine is imposing on thousands of families and uplift the families’ story.
The Moreno Forero family is just one of many, many families who are being torn apart and while we may not know their names while we may not know their names, their humanity is just as important.
Nicolle Orozco Forero, member of SEIU 925, a mom, and child care provider is being held in a detention center. She was just days away from opening her licensed in-home child care business in Washington State.
On June 18, Nicolle, her husband, and their two small children were detained by ICE and transferred to a family detention facility in Texas. They are asylum seekers from Colombia who went to court for a routine check-in.
Nicolle’s 6-year-old son Juan has a serious medical condition. He was receiving treatment in Washington, which he can no longer receive while in detainment. Detaining the family in Texas and threatening to deport them not only separates them from their community, it is literally endangering Juan’s life.
No family should be punished for seeking asylum, especially when a child’s life is at stake. This is just plain cruel.
We demand the Moreno Family be freed from detention.
SEIU is mobilizing union members, community leaders and people of faith in a Justice Journey leading to Louisiana, to demonstrate our continued rejection of the Trump administration’s unrelenting attacks on immigrants. We will shine a light on “detention alley” as one of the epicenters of where people are being detained.
